The pattern was originally published in "52 weeks of shawls" by Laine Publishing.

Cold weather, wild nature and rustic yarn inspired me for designing this shawl. I wanted to create a perfect accessory for cold days to stay warm and enjoy all the beauty of the wintriness. No matter if during a walk in a foggy late autumn forest or at a windy winter ocean coast, this shawl will always be the perfect companion to stay cozy.

The parallelogram sections of the shawl remind me of a geological phenomenon called Skarn. It means a rock vein with coarse-grained crystals that can be formed during a metamorphic process in a rock. I saw a skarn on a geological field trip during my geosciences study a few years ago and was fascinated by the process. The purled stitch parallelograms are looking like some big crystals and it inspired me to call the design after this geological term.

Skarn has an asymmetrical triangular shape and is knitted from one corner to the opposite side with increases. The stitch pattern is made of horizontal sections which are slightly inclined because of the shawls shape. The sections are worked with knitted and purled stitches only, that makes the skill level of the pattern beginner friendly and relaxing to work.
